Dhall is one of my favourite things to eat when I fancy something simple, tasty and light. This Gujarati Style Tarka Dhall, packs in all the yummy homely tones you'd expect from a Dhall and is a proper healthier version of its cousin the 'Makhni Dhall'... which of course, I like once in a while too!
Treat yourself to a portion of goodness with a simple chopped salad and some Gujarati 'Bhakri'
1 CUP URUD LENTIL
1/2 CUP CHANNA LENTIL
1/4 CUP TOOR LENTIL
1 CUP OF WATER (KEEP EXTRA CLOSE BY INCASE)
2 GARLIC CLOVES - FINELY CHOPPED
1 SMALL FRESH TOMATO - CHOPPED
1 Tbsp Fresh Coriander / Cilantro
1 TSP SALT
1 TSP CHILLI POWDER
1/2 TSP TURMERIC POWDER
1 TBSP VEGETABLE OIL
1/2 TSP CUMIN SEEDS
1/4 TSP ASAFOEDITA (OPTIONAL)
1 DRIED RED CHILLI (OPTIONAL)
Easy preparation for this dish. Wash the mixed lentils several times before covering with 1/2" of water to boil
Chop 1 Small tomato into 8 pieces
Chop or crush 2 cloves of garlic
Chop or tear Fresh Coriander / Cilantro
Measure out the lentils and put into a sauce pan
Wash and rinse several times
Cover them with 1/2" water and bring to as boil and then simmer with lid on and cook until the lentils are soft. This takes approx 25-30 minutes.
Now add 1 cup of water and stir well
Add the garlic and the chopped fresh tomato and fresh coriander / cilantro
Now add the salt and spices,
1 tsp salt
1 tsp chilli powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
Stir well and bring to a boil, meanwhile....
Make a simple Tarka
Grab a small saucepan and add the vegetable oil and heat up
When hot, add the cumin seeds and Asafoedita and dried chilli, You'll see the oil cloud up and sizzle
Swirl the pan with the Tarka mix and pour over the now boiled Dhall/Lentils
Now lower the heat and simmer the Dhall for 5-8 minutes
your saucy threesome of Dhall with simple Tarka is ready!
